Tokyo Electron Wins Recognition as a Clarivate Top 100 Global Innovator 2023

Tokyo Electron (TEL) has announced today that it won the "Clarivate Top 100 Global Innovators 2023" title, as selected by Clarivate. This is the third time TEL has received this award.

As a global information service provider, Clarivate uses its own patent databases to annually select "The top 100 innovative companies/institutions." Clarivate identifies the companies and institutions that have obtained more than 100 patents in the last five years and evaluates them based on the proportion and scale of their international inventions, using a combination of four indicators including "Influence," "Success," "Globalization," and "Rarity."

TEL was selected for this honor because of its innovativeness and delivery of inventions that matter to the world.

Based on our vision to be a company filled with dreams and vitality that contributes to technological innovation in semiconductors, TEL has been advancing its IP strategy, business strategy, and R&D strategy in an integrated manner to build a strategically managed IP portfolio. TEL will continue reinforcing its strategic IP initiatives to further the establishment of a sustainable society through its world-leading technology and expansive product lineup.

TEL's technology development and IP

The cornerstones of TEL's competitiveness are the technology development capabilities and the IP that we own. We currently operate 12 R&D sites around the world, through which we are steadily establishing consortiums and partnerships with other equipment manufacturers and material suppliers and are actively pursuing collaboration based on this ecosystem. The number of active issued patents is 19,572*1, which is the largest in the semiconductor production equipment industry. The global patent application rate*2, the percentage of patent applications resulted in multi-country filings, has been approximately 70% for 10 consecutive years, and for inventions created through our cooperation with business partners, consortia, and academia in Japan and abroad, we actively promote filings of joint patent applications.

Through these initiatives, we have been maintaining our global advantage in the intellectual property domain.

  1. As of the end of March 2022
  2. Global patent application rate: the percentage of inventions filed in multiple countries among the number of filed inventions as patent application.
