Tokyo Electron Wins Recognition as a Clarivate Top 100 Global Innovator 2022

Tokyo Electron (TEL) has announced today that it won the “Clarivate Top 100 Global Innovators 2022” by Clarivate.

As a global information service provider, Clarivate uses its own patent databases to annually select “The top 100 innovative companies/institutions.” The evaluation is based on the proportion and scale of international inventions from companies/institutions that have obtained more than 100 patents in the last five years and is a ranking according to the four elements of “Influence,” “Success,” “Globalization,” and “Technical distinctiveness.”

TEL was selected for this honor because of its innovativeness and delivery of inventions that matter to the world.

Based on our vision that “A truly global company generating high added value and profits in the semiconductor and flat panel display industries through innovative technologies and groundbreaking proactive solutions that integrate diverse technologies,” TEL has been advancing its R&D strategy, business strategy and IP strategy in an integrated manner to build an appropriate IP portfolio. TEL will keep reinforcing its strategic IP initiatives to help the establishment of a sustainable society through its world-leading technology and expansive product lineup.

TEL’s technology development and IP
The cornerstones of TEL’s competitiveness are the technology development capabilities and the IP that we own. We currently operate 12 R&D sites around the world, through which we are steadily establishing consortiums and partnerships with other equipment manufacturers and material suppliers, and are actively pursuing collaboration based on this ecosystem. We have 17,450 active issued patents*1, and our global patent application ratio*2 has consistently remained around 70% for the past decade. The patent application approval rate has reached 79% in Japan and 83% in U.S. In the last two years, we also collaborated with research institutions of partner firms and universities around the world, filing 43 patent applications jointly with 15 companies and 16 organizations. We continuously and proactively acquire IP rights through technological development as well as establish the structure to protect and manage highly confidential technological information.
