Students’ Idea Factory, a festival for students’ research ideas, is a completely new “independent research support project for undergraduate students” jointly planned by the Japanese Association for the Advancement of Science (JAAS) with sponsoring companies, including Tokyo Electron (TEL), and cooperating organizations. The project launched in April 2023 with the support of the Cabinet Office, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (Tokyo Electron is participating as a diamond sponsor).

The Students’ Idea Factory solicits creative research ideas based on free thinking from undergraduate students who dream of being involved in science and supports the cultivation of selected ideas and their application in concrete research plans. By creating opportunities for them to present their ideas publicly, the festival hopes that these owners of research ideas will become leaders in line with the JAAS slogan “Brighter Sciences. Brighter Japan.”

This year, the second time the event has been held, it was held according to the following schedule.
(1)Summer camp: Thirty-five students were selected from the applicants. The camp was held at the TEL training facility from July 5 to 7.
(2)Acceleration program: The program was held on August 13 at TEL headquarters, including the Midsummer Networking Event.
(3)Final presentation: Eight finalists were selected to deliver final presentations. Outstanding presenters were awarded at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Tokyo on October 27.

This year, TEL presented the Diamond Prize to Masahiro Ota from the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Engineering for his research idea, “Room-Scale Hand: Exploring Systems to Flexibly Change the Operative Entity of Spatial Robots.”
Comment from Masahiro Ota:
“I am deeply honored to receive such a prestigious award. This research is the outcome of discussions with individuals from diverse fields, and I will continue to strive forward.”

TEL will continue to support initiatives for technology and innovation through TEL FOR GOOD activities.
