The ABU Robocon, sponsored by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union, was held in Mongolia on August 24.
Tokyo Electron (TEL) has been sponsoring the ABU Asia-Pacific Robot Contest (ABU Robocon) since 2020, a stage where young engineers from Asia showcase their talents. With cheering squads and spectators from 13 countries and regions gathering at the venue, the atmosphere was full of excitement.
The theme of this year’s event was “ROBOT BASKETBALL.” Teams composed of two robots competed in matches of basketball. In addition to passing and dribbling, the robots could even shoot flashy three-pointers and powerful dunk shots! The highlight of the competition was watching how each team made effective use of teamwork, technology, and strategy to outwit the other team’s robots to win.
The Grand Prix was awarded to the University of Tokyo, representing Japan. In the finals, they were at a disadvantage until the end when they made a comeback with a stunning dunk shot that led to victory. The unity displayed by their team, including the cheering squad wearing T-shirts with their names, left a lasting impression. The Tokyo Electron Award was awarded to the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia from Malaysia. The Universiti Teknologi Malaysia was unfortunately unable to score, but their unwillingness to give up to the end, despite being unable to perform movements they normally could, touched the hearts of spectators.
The competition showcased the passion, ideas, and technical capabilities displayed by students from the Asian region, and TEL looks forward to their future successes. TEL is a sponsor for the KOSEN Robocon, Gakusei Robocon, and ABU Robocon, and will continue to support a wide variety of “Roboconists.”
