Tokyo Electron (TEL) has been sponsoring the ABU Asia-Pacific Robot Contest (ABU Robocon) since 2020, a stage where young engineers from Asia showcase their talents. This year, for the first time since TEL’s sponsorship, the competition was held in an in-person format, with cheering squads and spectators from 13 countries and regions gathering at the venue in Cambodia, creating an exciting atmosphere.

The theme of this year’s event was “Casting Flowers over Angkor Wat.” Two robots of different types threw rings onto multiple poles symbolizing Angkor Wat, competing for points and speed. Some teams struggled due to a lack of desired materials, but the teamwork and passion they put into their robots resonated with the audience, earning them applause and admiration.

The Grand Prix and the ABU Robocon Award were awarded to Toyohashi University of Technology , representing Japan. The unity displayed by their team, including the cheering squad wearing T-shirts with their names, left a lasting impression. The Tokyo Electron Award was awarded to Alexandria University from Egypt. Although they did not score points in the competition, their ability to overcome a challenge in the second match demonstrated their adaptability.

The competition showcased the passion, ideas, and technical capabilities displayed by students from the Asian region, and TEL looks forward to their future successes.

TEL sponsors the Kosen Robot Contest, NHK Gakusei Robocon , and ABU Robocon, and will continue to support a wide range of “Roboconists.”
