TEL Technology Center, America(TTCA) hosted a group of students in partnership with Tech Valley High School for Camp Innovation. The group consisted of 7th and 8th grade students who spent the morning with the TTCA team learning about the semiconductor industry and TEL’s contribution. This year’s camp theme was wearable technology.

The day started with a welcome message and keynote address by Steve Consiglio, discussing semiconductor technology, the future of semiconductors and an overview of TEL, TTCA and our work in developing the next generation of technology.
Throughout the morning, students were split into three groups with each group able to participate in a host of hands-on activities.
The first activity station allowed the campers the opportunity to experience what it is like to wear a bunny suit. The campers enjoyed trying on the suits and taking pictures all while learning the technology behind the suits and why bunny suits are required in the clean room; not only to protect the wearer, but also to protect the wafers and equipment.

The second activity involved augmented reality (AR) glasses and Legos. Students were tasked with building a Lego tower, while wearing a pair of HMT glasses. Students took turns wearing the video headset while being instructed on how to build a structure by the rest of the team. Students were also given a demo of the wearable technology and how TTCA utilizes tools such as AR headsets to collaborate in real time across the globe.

Lastly, the students learned about what a semiconductor is and how they work by building circuits and testing the conductivity of various materials including wafers.
Afterwards, students had the opportunity to interact with TTCA staff and ask questions about technology, semiconductors, and TEL where the TTCA volunteers were surprised at how technical some of the students’ questions were. TTCA looks forward to continuing this event and helping develop the engineers of the future.
