Ryunosuke Toyama after receiving a TEL award

Physics underpins modern science and technology and is an indispensable field to development of the semiconductor manufacturing equipment industry.
Since 2019, Tokyo Electron (TEL) has provided support to the Physics Challenge, for junior high school and high school students across Japan who will play a crucial role in Japan’s future.

The Physics Challenge 2024 awards ceremony was held on August 23, 2024. This year’s Tokyo Electron Award was presented to Ryunosuke Toyama, a third-year student at Rakunan High School (Kyoto Prefecture). He was awarded by TEL for his overall performance in the experiment report and theoretical test in the first round of the competition (901 participants), which was held online in July.

Approximately 100 people selected based for their performances in the first round of the competition took on the second round, which was held at SPring-8 (a large-scale synchrotron radiation facility in Sayo-gun, Hyogo Prefecture) between August 20 and 23.
As a result, Toyama was awarded the gold prize in addition to the prize mentioned above.

(Ryunosuke Toyama’s Award Comment)
“I’m incredibly honored to receive this TEL award. Thank you. I want to study physics in depth in college, and I want to explore the world of the natural sciences while learning about other fields as well.”

We will continue to support technology and innovation initiatives through our TEL FOR GOOD activities.

-The “Physics Challenge” also serves as a selection process for the Japanese representatives to be sent to the International Physics Olympiad. Students who show particularly outstanding performance in the second round and meet the qualifications to participate in the following year’s International Physics Olympiad will be selected as candidates to represent Japan. The students will further improve their skills by participating in training programs such as correspondence correction and training camps. After the final selection process, five students will be sent to the following year’s International Physics Olympiad as representatives of Japan.
