    Trial internship

In November 2017, Tokyo Electron Miyagi implemented a two-day trial internship program for Taiwa Junior High School students in Kurokawa-gun, Miyagi Prefecture. On the first day, the students visited a cleanroom and operated actual equipment to understand how the machines work and how passionate our engineers are about manufacturing products. On the second day, the students assisted the operations at the security room (where the workplace environment is monitored for safety) and at the mail room, learning to appreciate diverse support functions of a corporate organization.
The students’ feedbacks were positive, proving that the program gave them a sense of affinity to the local company. “I now know that so many people at the plant are producing the products with good care,” wrote one student. “I wish to learn more about the design and production processes,” another student commented. Tokyo Electron Miyagi hopes that the trial internship will teach the participants the importance of workplace discipline and make the company a possible career choice for them.

    Earthquake memorial event

In the aftermath of the devastating East Japan Great Earthquake of March 2011, the work to rebuild the houses and towns has been proceeding steadily. At the same time, however, there are some concerns that the memory of the unprecedented disaster may have already begun to fade. Determined to keep the tragic lesson fresh in our memory while encouraging the local citizens to move on without dwelling on the past, Miyagi Prefecture and local newspapers have been co-organizing the 3.11 Earthquake Memorial Event since 2013.
The first half of the 2017 event was a cheering performance by the Miyagi Recovery Cheering Squad in collaboration with local children, instead of customary recitation of poems. The second half was a concert by Takeshi Tsuruno. The participants and the audience joined in a chorus of “Furusato” (Hometown) in closing.
Tokyo Electron Miyagi has been endorsing this event as a sponsor since 2016.

Energy-saving technologies used at the plant

The Tokyo Electron Miyagi Plant has introduced the following eco-friendly technologies to promote symbiosis with the environment:
    - Eco factory monitor
The technology allows the energy use throughout the plant to be monitored in a transparent manner, making it easy to analyze the energy efficiency at key points to eliminate waste.
    - Natural ventilation system
The skylights on the office roof are equipped with ventilation apertures that open and close automatically depending on the outside temperature. The system enhances natural ventilation, reducing the energy need for air conditioning.
    - Solar power system
A 1,000 kW solar system has been installed as an auxiliary energy source for lighting the office building.
    - Illuminance sensors
Illuminance sensors have been installed along with energy-efficient lighting systems, allowing the lighting levels to be optimally adjusted to the daylight intensity.

Wishing to raise the environmental awareness, Tokyo Electron Miyagi is keeping a goat and its kid on its premises as a means of chemical-free weed control. The two animals graze peacefully on the green pasture within the site from spring to early autumn, when the weather tends to be fair. The mother goat Hana that arrived in 2016 and her kid Terumi (named through an in-house competition) are very popular among the employees, and are petted by many during lunch breaks.

As part of its afforestation and environmental preservation efforts, Tokyo Electron Miyagi is planting trees at a 4.2-hectare prefecture-owned forest land, dubbed the Tokyo Electron Forest, in Taiwa-cho. At the inaugural ceremony held in November 2017, a forest identification sign was unveiled in the presence of the Mayor of Taiwa-cho, officials of Miyagi Prefecture, and Tokyo Electron Miyagi President Hirofumi Kitayama.
Following the ceremony, Tokyo Electron employees and their families took part in planting cherry and walnut saplings, attaching name signs and birdhouses on trees, nature observation, and nature crafting (such as making a pencil out of a tree branch).
Under a clear blue sky, many children who participated in the event were beaming with joy.

Heartful Project at Queen's Ekiden in Miyagi

The 37th All-Japan Women's Corporate Ekiden Championships (“Queen’s Ekiden in Miyagi”) was held on November 26, 2017. TEL has been sponsoring this annual event since the 31st race. At this event, TEL also supported the Heartful Project for earthquake relief by providing gloves and acoustic megaphones with heart motifs to roadside cheerers. This form of support is in line with the project’s mission of “passing on compassion and sending hope” to those recovering from the ravages of the earthquake.
