    Entertaining Science Show & Tell

Tokyo Electron Miyagi held an event entitled “Entertaining Science Show & Tell 2019: Let’s Open a Magic Box!” on August 22, 2019 at the Tokyo Electron Hall Miyagi.
This year was our 11th event, which was originally established with the purpose of letting the children experience the fun of science. Despite being held on the last day of the summer holidays, the audience totaled about 2,000 including elementary school children and their guardians.
Demonstrations included one showing the power of air using an air cannon, and one showing how a singer can raise the pitch of their voice by singing into a bag filled with helium gas. With other experiments conducted in the science lab, including use of liquid nitrogen and creating artificial salmon roe, the children really enjoyed themselves.

    Work experience support

TEL’s domestic manufacturing facilities offer work experience programs every year to help foster human resources and contribute to local communities.

In June 2019, Tokyo Electron Miyagi implemented a three-day trial internship program for Miyatoko Junior High School students in Kurokawa-gun, Miyagi Prefecture.

In particular, the program focuses specifically on actual business, including factory tours and training on exchanging business cards and other Japanese customs, 3D CAD design and wafer inspections, and onsite lessons about logistics processes.

The students’ feedbacks were positive, proving that the program gave them a sense of affinity to the local company. “I now know that so many people at the plant are producing the products with good care,” wrote one student. “I wish to learn more about the design and production processes,” another student commented. Tokyo Electron Miyagi hopes that the trial internship will teach the participants the importance of workplace discipline and make the company a possible career choice for them.

The 39th All-Japan Women's Corporate Ekiden Championships (“Queen’s Ekiden in Miyagi”) was held on November 24, 2019. TEL has been sponsoring this annual event since the 31st race. At this event, TEL also supported the Heartful Project for earthquake relief by providing gloves and acoustic megaphones with heart motifs to roadside cheerers. This form of support is in line with the project’s mission of “passing on compassion and sending hope” to those recovering from the ravages of the earthquake.

    Tree planting

As part of its afforestation and environmental preservation efforts, Tokyo Electron Miyagi is planting trees at a 4.2-hectare prefecture-owned forest land, dubbed the Tokyo Electron Forest, in Taiwa-cho.

Since 2017, a tree planting event has been held every year. In 2019, the event was held on November 10. (Cumulative results in the last three years: 272 saplings and 224 participants)

Last year, in fine autumn weather, 86 participants (including children) came together to plant 80 saplings of katsura, walnut, sawtooth oak, pine, etc., install birdhouses, construct a boardwalk, and cut high branches, amongst other types of work.
In addition, “nature craft” activities like using wood to make whistles, spinning tops, balancing toys, straps, etc. were a favorite amongst children as they got to experience the fun of creating handicrafts from natural materials.

Since autumn overlaps with the harvest season, there were many delicious foods. At lunch, there were freshly baked goods, spare ribs, giant sausages, newly harvested rice, and sweet potato soup, altogether satisfying everyone’s autumnal appetites!

Going forward, Tokyo Electron Technology Solutions will continue activities aimed at leaving a better global environment for our children.

Energy-saving technologies used at the plant

The Tokyo Electron Miyagi Plant has introduced the following eco-friendly technologies to promote symbiosis with the environment:
    - Eco factory monitor
The technology allows the energy use throughout the plant to be monitored in a transparent manner, making it easy to analyze the energy efficiency at key points to eliminate waste.
    - Natural ventilation system
The skylights on the office roof are equipped with ventilation apertures that open and close automatically depending on the outside temperature. The system enhances natural ventilation, reducing the energy need for air conditioning.
    - Solar power system
A 1,000 kW solar system has been installed as an auxiliary energy source for lighting the office building.
    - Illuminance sensors
Illuminance sensors have been installed along with energy-efficient lighting systems, allowing the lighting levels to be optimally adjusted to the daylight intensity.

Environmental protection by natural weed control

Wishing to raise the environmental awareness, Tokyo Electron Miyagi is keeping a goat and its kid on its premises as a means of chemical-free weed control. The two animals graze peacefully on the green pasture within the site from spring to early autumn, when the weather tends to be fair. The mother goat Hana that arrived in 2016 and her kid Terumi (named through an in-house competition) are very popular among the employees, and are petted by many during lunch breaks.
