The American Red Cross of Central Texas presented the 2003 Heroes of Central Texas winners with their awards at the Renaissance Hotel in Austin on February 7, 2003. The seven finalists from Bastrop, Hays, Williamson and Travis counties were nominated by members of their communities for demonstrating extraordinary acts of courage and service. The 2003 recipient of the Education Hero award, sponsored by Tokyo Electron, was Walnut Creek Elementary teacher, Robert Pham. Pham was honored for dedicating his time to tutoring and mentoring current and former students. He encompasses all the characteristics of an extraordinary teacher. Other award categories included the Adult Good Samaritan award, Workplace Hero, Military Hero, Community Impact Hero, and the Professional Rescuer award. Companies that helped support the awards included TEL, AMD, Dell, HEB, Howdy Honda, and Motorola.

In December of 2002, TEL donated $50,000 to the Red Cross Dresden Relief Fund to help those affected by the flooding in the vicinity of Dresden, Germany. The Red Cross dispersed the funds so that those most in need received assistance.

The tragedies in New York, Washington D.C., and Pittsburgh were felt most profoundly in the United States, but also deeply affected people around the world. As a company who has focused on global expansion in recent years, the events of Sept. 11, 2001, touched all of our employees significantly, and we are proud of their efforts to respond in this terrible time. We extend our deepest sympathy to all of the victims and their loved ones. TEL donated $250,000 to the Red Cross Relief effort after the tragedy of September 11. We hope that the dual support of the Red Cross from TEL and its employees can help in some small way to alleviate the suffering of the victims and the families affected by the Sept. 11 tragedy.
